This week’s fave: Polystichum setiferum ‘Pumoso multilobum’

Polystichum setiferum ‘Pumoso multilobum’

My favorite of all the ferns, Polystichum setiferum ‘Pumoso multilobum’ swirls in a way that has caused it to be compared to a whirlwind. As it matures, it becomes fluffier. I have two of these, and they anchor the woodland bed.

It’s really hard to capture the dynamic nature of this plant in a photo, but trust me: it has more than a little personality.

I keep stepping back to try to give you an idea of its presence in the woodland. I give up! It simply needs to be seen to be believed. Come on out any time and I will introduce you to this, my favorite plant in the garden this week. Check out Danger Garden for Loree’s fave of the week, and be sure to see the comments for links to others’ choices.

  1. Peter/Outlaw Says:

I fell in love with this fern in someone else’s garden this year and have one still in a pot. It’s truly gorgeous!

  2. Loree /danger garden Says:

I, like Peter, have seen this in another garden…but I can’t remember where. Thank you for the name, now I know what to hunt for!

  3. Mark and Gaz Says:

We love this fern, looks so elegant and tactile. And it just gets better every year!

  4. Alison Says:

Oh, I love how fluffy this fern is! What a great choice.

  5. Angie Says:

Great looking fern - very tactile!

  6. ricki Says:

Peter~I think I will have to keep adding more. The whirlwind effect is more pronounced early on, before it begins to “fluff up”.

    Loree~Only too happy to oblige.

Mark & Gaz~Sounds like you have one (or a few) of these already?

    Alison~Thanks!

    Angie~Petting allowed.

  7. Christina Says:

I love ferns, sadly I’ve nowhere they would be happy in this garden but I enjoy seeing them in others’ gardens.

  8. ricki Says:

Christina~Thanks for finding your way to Sprig to Twig and leaving a comment. One of the joys of visiting blogs is getting to enjoy the things we can’t grow ourselves. Your garden is always like a breath of fresh air to me.

  9. linda Says:

Now why didn’t they have that one at the ‘tough love sale’ ?

  10. ricki Says:

    Linda~Indeed!

  11. Sarah/Galloping Horse Garden Says:

Very lush! It could almost be an evergreen forest seen from an airplane. Is it related to Christmas fern? If so, it is a lot better looking.

  12. Heather Says:

Oh, I want it, I need it! How beautiful!

  13. ricki Says:

Sarah~Like the Christmas fern, it’s a Polystichum, so I guess yes, same family. This one is fluffier, with that swirling business.

Heather~Be on the lookout…it would be great in your garden.
