in a vase…well, sort of

Well, deary me: this didn’t turn out nearly as cute as it was in my imagination.

Loree (Danger Garden) challenged us to do something with ornamental Kale. I thought a pumpkin totem with black mondo grass leading up to the topknot of kale would be terrific.

Oh, well…best laid plans, and all that.

We’ll just call it more of a trick than a treat, shall we? Cathy (Rambling in the Garden) can put you in touch with much better efforts as she challenges us to find something to put in a vase every Monday of the year.

  1. I think it’s a great idea. I considered doing something similar with ornamental cabbage when I discovered that the resident squirrels had already drilled through a pumpkin I placed by the front door.

  2. Are you kidding me? This is fabulous! Seriously fun Ricki. Maybe because I can’t see the idea you had so I don’t know what your judging it against? I love it and hope you’re still entering it in the challenge. I bet you get lots of positive feedback on your creation!

(And I must ask, what are the pumpkins sitting on? A metal can? It looks very interesting in its own right.)

  3. Well did say it was a bit of a disappointment, didn’t you? Certainly a bit different – well, very different, so thanks for being brave enough to share it 😉

  4. Oh, I think it looks fabulous! I didn’t even try with Kale this year. I have in the past, but I’m so amazed by most of my summer annuals still being alive (we haven’t had a killing frost yet!). Now that I see your contribution, I realize I should have made an attempt with the contest. This is quite creative!

    • I thought it was a fun idea to try to do something artistic with kale, which crowds the entry to every grocery store this time of year. Quite a few people were highly successful.
